Choose the Best Roofing Type for Your Home

Whether you’re building a new home or replacing an existing roof, there is one big question that always arises. What type of roof do you want?

The materials used on the roof are important since they affect the look and function of your roof. They also affect how long your roof will last before you need to replace or repair it. Certain roofing types are more common than others throughout the UK, so consider carefully which option is best for your needs.

Slating

Using slate on your roof gives it a classic, stylish look. Slate is a type of stone that is cut into tiles that can be fitted like shingles onto your roof, giving it a dark grey look. You’ll often find this on older homes, but it’s still popular on new ones, as well.

Slate looks amazing, but it’s also long-lasting and will not grow mould, fungus or let water through. It’s also quite eco-friendly, considering it came from the ground and can be returned there. Add to this the fact that slate is fireproof and can last for up to 150 years and you have an excellent roofing option.

The downsides include weight since stone can be heavy. You’ll need a sturdy structure to hold it up. Slate is also easily broken by falling objects and can be expensive to install. It requires specialists, as the technique is different from other roofing types.

Clay Tiles

As the name suggests, clay tiles are made from clay and while their natural colour is a rustic red, they come in a variety of finishes and designs. From curved to flat, these tiles add a Mediterranean look to your home.

While beautiful and long-lasting, clay tiles tend to vary in size and shape, which makes installation a little more challenging. They provide excellent insulation and are resistant to nearly all types of weather, which ensures they are as low maintenance as possible. With proper care, clay tile roofs can last up to 100 years before needing to be replaced.

Asphalt Shingles

Available in many colours, asphalt shingles are an excellent option for roofing. They are usually reinforced, either with cellulose or fibreglass, but they still don’t last as long as the previous selections.

These shingles are quite easy to install, and any roofer will be familiar with the task. Since they’re easier to install and made from a common material that requires very little to create, they are more cost-effective than most other options.

Which roofing material you choose will depend on your budget, the style or look you like, and how long you wish your roof to last. Talk to your roofing contractor if you’re not certain of your decision.
