Plants That Are Perfect for a Green Roof

A green roof is a perfect addition to your home. It increases your energy efficiency, lowers your carbon footprint, and helps your home become more resistant to fire. However, you do need to choose the plants that will go on top of your home and this can be confusing. What plants are the best choice for your roof?

Widow’s Cross

A beautiful green plant with pink flowers, Widow’s Cross is a sedum that is hardy and doesn’t need much in the way of care. It does best with plenty of sunshine and can grow up to a foot high, with lots of protection for the roof.

Gold Sedum

This beautiful perennial is a plant that doesn’t grow very high, but it helps protect the entire roof with its matted roots. It’s also called gold moss, due to the incredible, brilliant yellow flowers that are produced. It’s a very lovely plant and is drought resistant, so you don’t even need to water it that often.

White Stonecrop

This plant features similar flowers to the gold sedum (it’s also a sedum plant), but in white. The plant is a perennial, as well and it helps hold down the soil on the roof. It’s good for providing a protective layer on the roof, as well as encouraging bees and birds to come by.

Oregano

Moving away from sedums, some herbs do particularly well as a rooftop cover. Oregano is an excellent choice for a rooftop garden. It does tend to get large if not pruned from time to time, so it does require more maintenance than other plants. Keep it around four inches in height. You can also use the plant in your food, so it’s doubly useful.

Black Sedge

Black sedge or carex nigra is a beautiful black grass that will grow nicely on a roof. It provides a good cover for the roof, particularly when mixed with other plants. However, it is best grown in damp or wet conditions, so it won’t hold up well if there isn’t enough water to go around.

Blue Sedge

This particular grass is a good grass that will spread rapidly across the green roof. It’s quite lovely and grows to a height of 40-50 cm. While it prefers wet weather, it will also hold up against drought and this makes it ideal for UK roofs. With green and blue colours, this plant looks very lovely on a roof.
