Why Roofing Is So Important In Modern Architecture

There is no question that roofing is one of the most important parts of any building project. After all, without a well-built roof, the building will be extremely susceptible to the weather which could drastically damage the property. Though there is more to the roof than just weatherproofing. Put it this way, the roof is one of the most prominent aspects of any building and good designers and architects will want to take advantage of this and use the space to bring more personality to the building. In fact, roofs are often the focal points for a lot of modern building designs.

The beginnings of modern architecture

In the early 20th century the entire world saw one of the largest transitions in cultural history. We waved goodbye to some of our most traditional principles and welcomed a new era of culture. With this new era came music, dance, poetry, and fashion but it also saw a new frontier for design. The world of architecture changed exponentially and some of the buildings that started to appear around the world truly challenged the status quo with their audacious designs.

Falling Water

One of these buildings was of course the Falling Water House which was designed by the world-famous architect Frank Loyd Wright. Wright truly changed the landscape of modern architecture and brought the entire field forward. The house was a shining example of what was really possible with modern architecture and has since inspired thousands to take up the profession. Though one of the most amazing things about the falling water building and the area which truly grounds the whole house is, of course, the roof.

The Falling Water Roof

When you look at the Falling Water building you quickly realise that the house does not have one roof at all. Instead, there are a series of roofs which cascade down the hillside much like the waterfall below the building. This allows the home to flow and creates a real sense of movement. These roofs are transfixing and cantilever dramatically over the river below. This is why roofing is so important as without these cantilevered structures Falling Water would simply not be the same. The building would have none of its charms and feel so far removed from the flowing structure it is today that it would almost be unrecognizable.
